Michele Abbondanza comes from the Venetian experience of Carolyn Carlson at Teatro La Fenice in Venice in the early eighties, co-founded in 1984 the group Sosta Palmizi (Il cortile, Ubu prize 1985) and meets Antonella Bertoni in Paris, where they both dance in different creations by Carolyn Carlson. In the early nineties they return to Italy, where they found the Compagnia Abbondanza / Bertoni recognized as one of the most prolific artistic realities of the Italian scene, which combines the creation of shows with teaching and research in the field of contemporary dance theater.
They create as guest choreographers the choreography for Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and the Compagnia Aterballetto; they collaborate with the directors: M. Baliani, N. Garella, R. Guicciardini, with Luca Ronconi for the opera Armida (ROF 2014) and with the musicians: John Surman, Steve Lacy, Michel Portal, Barre Phillips, Sebi Tramontana, Michel Doneda and the Lydian Sound Orchestra, directed by Riccardo Brazzale, with whom they create the choreography for The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Charles Mingus Jazz Opera never performed live before (2014).
They take part in the film by Bernardo Bertolucci Io ballo da sola (1995) and are among the protagonists of the choreography created for Vieni via con me, broadcast by Fabio Fazio and Roberto Saviano, broadcasted on Rai Tre (2010).
They win the Danza & Danza prize "best performers", the Cascina prize for choreography, the ETI-Stregagatto award with the show "Romanzo d'infanzia", which has exceeded 600 replicas in its four versions (Italian, English, French and Portuguese) and in 2017 the Danza & Danza "best show" award for La morte e la fanciulla.
They sign and interpret more than thirty creations, among which we remember the duo of the debut Terramara (re-established within the project RIC.CI - Reconstruction Italian Contemporary Choreography of the Eighties-Nineties, conceived by Marinella Guatterini), the Ho male dell'altro project, trilogy on Greek tragedy (Alcesti, Medea, Polis), the biennial project for 12 dancers La densità dell'umano (La massa and A libera figura), the Biologico project that combines special interpreters characterized by strong physical signs, as in the case Le fumatrici di pecore and Il groppo, or organic signs, as in Scena Madre (on stage Antonella and her mother); the Antonella solo, Try, and Michele solo, I dream, and the latest creations: Gli Orbi, a quintet that investigates the vices and weaknesses of human nature; La morte e la fanciulla on the homonymous quartet by Schubert e Balli Plastici Remix 1918-2018, and Balli Plastici Remix 1918-2018, free revisitating of the historical show by Fortunato Depero.
They give life to the Piccola Compagnia Abbondanza / Bertoni, an ambitious project for the establishment of a stable core of youngsters, leading to the presentation of Il Ballo del Qua and Duel, performances interpreted by children for an adult audience.
In 2008they give life to Scuola d'Azione, a theoretical and physical space for the transmission of their teaching, at the Teatro alla Cartiera in Rovereto (TN), where the company is residing.
They practice and teach Zen whose profound traces remain in their creations and constant training activities.
Since 1996 Michele Abbondanza teches dance at the Scuola di Teatro Giorgio Strehler, directed by Carmelo Rifici (Piccolo Teatro di Milano).
